Mary Jane Veloso’s Close Brush with Death.

Mary Jane Veloso

Veloso, 30, became the sole survivor — for now — of Wednesday’s executions.

Eight people were put to death by a firing squad, including two ring leaders of the “Bali Nine,” a group of Australians convicted of smuggling heroin from Indonesia into Australia.

“The executions have been successfully implemented, perfectly,” Indonesian Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo said, the Associated Press reported. “All worked, no misses.”

The decision to spare Veloso’s life came minutes before her death, after a woman accused of planting roughly $500,000 worth of heroin in Veloso’s suitcase five years ago turned herself in to police in the Philippines, according to the Straits Times.

Investigators now believe Veloso, a Filipino maid, may have been preyed upon by traffickers and want her to testify in court.
