A Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps Officer (NSCDC) in Ondo
State command yesterday allegedly shot his colleague while pursuing a
suspected fraudster at Araromi area of Akure, the state capital.
According to a source, the officer and his colleagues pursued the suspected fraudster into a shop and subsequently arrested him in the process.
The suspect had attempted to escape through a Golf car.
It was also gathered that while some residents were protesting the action of the NSCDC officers, one of them accidentally shot his colleague.
The source disclosed that the NSCDC officers acted unprofessionally while handling their guns in the process of the arrest.
The injured officer, who had lost so much blood, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officers, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the officers were on official duty to arrest some assailants when the incident happened.
Joseph said in the process of their arrest, one of the officers was mistakenly shot.
The NSCDC spokesperson in Ondo state, Mr. Kayode Balogun, also confirmed the incident, saying, however, that it was not true that one officer shot another.
Balogun said the officers went to arrest some suspected fraudsters and in the process, one of the fraudsters escaped and shot the said officer.
According to him, the command had arrested one of them “who is giving us a useful information on how to arrest the fleeing ones”.
