The financial constraint caused by the oil slump is having effect on the 2015 Christmas celebrations in Osun State.
Our correspondent
observed that although the state government had decorated some public places
with Christmas lights, the decorations are a far cry from the previous years’.
The state used to usher
in the New Year with an elaborate display of fireworks but Governor Rauf
Aregbesola had announced the ban on the sale and use of fireworks in the state.
This shows that the
administration is not ready to waste money on pyrotechnic display to usher in
2016.
The governor in a
statement issued recently gave security reasons for banning the use of
fireworks.
The statement partly
read, “In a bid to ensure that the state remains safe and peaceful during the
Yuletide season and always, the Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola,
has directed that the use of fireworks be banned in the state.
“The state is banning
the use of fireworks to stay on top of the situation as it concerns security
during the festive period and at all times.”
Despite the
announcement of the ban, the Peoples Democratic Party had accused the governor
of planning to spend N50m on fireworks and lightings.
But many residents of
the state are aware that the administration which receives N55m from the
Federation Account per month cannot afford to spend N50m on fireworks.
The Consultant to Osun
State Government on Information, Mr. Sunday Akere, in a telephone
interview with our correspondent, said Christmas decorations for this year were
very scanty.
He said the state
government needed to do the few decorations just to identify with the
Christians, who are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
