Gay rights activist Bisi Alimi has called out the Nigerian police for equating his name with homosexuality in Nigeria.
Bisi's angst stems from the incident with Tosin, a hair stylist in Lagos, who was arrested and detained because he looks feminine and gay. After his arrest, things got worse for him when the police searched his phone and saw an Instagram chat with Bisi Alimi. They concluded that he must be gay because he was having a conversation with Bisi Alimi, a known gay man.
Tosin
After his release from the police holding cell, Tosin shared this bit of information with Bisi and the gay rights activist was not impressed with this, so he took to social media to warn the Nigerian police.
Bisi tweeted: "Dear @PoliceNG, in the last 24hrs your men have been breaking the law and invading people’s privacy. The last time I checked, it is a crime to go through citizens’ phone. Also please when did my name become the alternative for homosexuality? @NigeriapolicePR @NigeriaPolice"
