SDP chairmen back leadership on CUPP, endorse actions taken on Osun, others

Ahead of the 2019 general election, the Forum of State Chairmen  of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has backed the leadership of the party over its involvement in the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with other political parties under the umbrella of Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) to take over power from the present administration of the  All Progressives  Congress (APC) .

The forum also threw its weight behind the decision of the party leadership to effect change in the party’s structures in  states like Osun, Jigawa, Niger, Bauchi, Adamawa and Abia.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja at the weekend after the emergency meeting of the forum, its chairman,

Ambassador Oke Idawere, who is also the chairman of the Delta State chapter of the party, declared that the forum considered a strong coalaition as the only viable option to sack the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration from office in 2019.

According to him, no individual political party against the ruling APC in 2019, saying the present  government has totally derailed from the track and norms of democratic governance, the adverse effects which, if not stopped in 2019 with a change of government at the centre, will spell total doom for the nation

Ambassador Idawere further stated that the forum agreed that the coalition was neither a merger or an alliance with any political party nor a political party on its own but an agreement by concerned parties to work together for a common purpose.

He explained that all the political parties that formed the coalition would still retain their individual identities as the sole agenda now is to work together to ease out the APC-led federal government in 2019 In a democratic manner.

He further explained that now that the MOU had been successfully signed by the leadership of the political parties involved, the next step would be for them to sit down and work out the modalities  and the blueprint that would  guide the operations of the coalition for it to be successful.

Ambassador Idawere also said the forum also passed a vote of confidence in the SDP leadership of the party on the various decisions taken so far towards building and repositioning it ahead of the 2019 elections, especially the change in the leadership of the party in some states

According to him, “the affected States are Jigawa, Osun,Niger, Bauchi,Adamawa and Abia.

“ The leadership of our party under Chief Olu Falae took the right and acceptable steps in affecting the changes in the states. It was discovered that some of them [affected leaders in the states] were involved in anti-party activities.

“Even  one of the affected former chairmen took the party to court and the case was just thrown out. So, it shows that our party leadership was right. We don’t need the courts to run our party’s affairs,” he stated.

The forum also endorsed  the dates and the arrangements already  made for the conduct of congress   ?at all levels nationwide.
