Ebonyi
State Government has pledged to collaborate with the United Nations Children
Fund to enhance the proficiency of teachers in the state.
Governor
Dave Umahi stated this when he received the UNICEF Country Representative in
Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms.Jean Gough, in Abakaliki.
Umahi,
who said he would return some mission schools to their owners, noted that his
administration remained committed to providing quality education to the
citizens.
He
added, “We are going to collaborate with the UN body to improve the proficiency
of our teachers. They should understand their bearing well. You know that the
state just employed many of them and so we need to give them better
orientation. Our target is to ensure that we can get it right in order to
improve on the quality of education in the state.
“Besides,
we plan to return some mission schools to their owners as some of you have
advised us.”
The
governor, who identified poor electricity supply as the major hindrance to
primary health system, urged the fund to assist by providing solar lights to
the health centres in the state.
Gough,
in her remarks, lauded state government for being part of the success story in
the certification of Nigeria as a polio free country.
She
also promised that the fund would collaborate with the state in health,
education and protection of children against obnoxious practices, like, genital
mutilation.
