A crane has collapsed on to the
Grand Mosque in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca killing at least 87 people.
Some 154 people have been
wounded, revealed the civil defence authority on Twitter.
It has not yet been established what
happened, but images shared on social media showed the impact.

The incident comes just weeks before
the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is later this month.
Pictures circulating on social media
showed people in bloodied robes and masses of debris from a part of the
crane – from current construction work – that appeared to have crashed
through the ceiling.
Mecca is considered a sacred site in
Islam, with huge numbers of people expected to arrive for the holy journey.
The place of worship is also known
as Masjid al-Ḥarām, the Sacred Mosque and the Great Mosque of Mecca.
It’s the largest mosque in the world
and reportedly opened its doors back in 638AD.
