The incident comes just weeks before the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is later this month.

Pictures circulating on social media showed people in bloodied robes and masses of debris from a part of the crane – from current construction work – that appeared to have crashed through the ceiling.

Mecca is considered a sacred site in Islam, with huge numbers of people expected to arrive for the holy journey.

The place of worship is also known as Masjid al-Ḥarām, the Sacred Mosque and the Great Mosque of Mecca.

It’s the largest mosque in the world and reportedly opened its doors back in 638AD.
