Lionel Messi insists there are still
many more magical nights to come for him and Barcelona after celebrating
his 100th Champions League against Roma on Wednesday night.
The Argentinian became the youngest
player to reach the milestone when he took to the turf during
Barcelona’s 1-1 draw in Italy, according to Daily Mail.
Messi almost celebrated the night with a
goal when he crashed the bar late on as Barcelona looked to kick off
the group stages with a win.
And
although victory eluded him, the 28-year-old took to Facebook to
promise fans he still has a lot more European nights left in the tank.
“I’m really happy to have played 100 games in the best club competition in the world,” Messi wrote on the social network page.
“There have been a lot of European nights to remember and there are many more magic nights to come.”
Messi is hoping to win the Champions
League for a fifth time after winning the prestigious competition in
2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015.
Meanwhile, Barcelona defender Gerard
Pique led the tributes to the “crazy” goal scored by Alessandro Florenzi
that earned Roma a point from the sides’ 1-1 Champions League draw on
Wednesday, AFP reports.
“It was crazy!” Pique wrote on Twitter
in a reply to a fan who had asked the Spanish defender’s reaction to
Florenzi’s long-distance strike that caught Barcelona ‘keeper Marc-Andre
ter Stegen off guard.
“When I saw the goal, I didn’t believe it! One of the best goals I’ve received in my career.”
On what was Messi’s 100th Champions
League appearance, the Argentinian had been hoping to close the gap on
rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s new record tally for goals in the competition.
