The National Universities Commission will
begin the accreditation of programmes at the Federal University,
Otuoke, Bayelsa State, in October, 2015, the Vice-Chancellor of the
institution, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, has said.
Aluko made this known in Otuoke on Friday when the Governing Council of the university visited the institution.
FUO is one of the nine federal universities established in 2011 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Speaking
to newsmen after conducting members of the Governing Council on a
facility tour of the university, Aluko said the institution “now has
faculties of Science, Humanities and Social Sciences with a total of 12
programmes.”
The VC said, “This institution has been
working very hard for the past three years to ensure full accreditation
of the existing 12 programmes and now, we are good to go. Accreditation
comes up in October.”
He said the university had zero tolerance for corruption, cultism and examination malpractice.
He added, “In the university, we have
zero tolerance for sexual harassment, we have zero tolerance for cult
activities, examination cheating and theft.
“We have suspended seven students for
exams malpractice and an employee for theft. This is a university that
cares but we don’t condone any form of corruption.”
He also noted that the institution had a
skills acquisition centre, which according to him, is almost a faculty
of its own, catering for low and middle-level manpower development.
Meanwhile, the Governing Council at its
inaugural meeting on the university campus, approved the commencement of
remedial courses to prepare students for admission examinations.
One of the members, Damishi Sango, who
spoke to newsmen on behalf of the council shortly after the meeting,
said the need for remedial programmes became imperative given the rate
of failures in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board-conducted
examinations.
