Petrol tanker falls on bus in Osun

A petrol-laden tanker on Thursday fell and crushed a commercial bus at the Asubiaro area of Osogbo, Osun State.

Our correspondent gathered that no life was lost in the accident which reportedly occurred barely two minutes after passengers of the bus disembarked due to a flat tyre.

Some residents of the area said the 33,000-litre-capacity tanker pulled off from the vehicle after it entered into a pothole on the road.

The tanker was said to have fallen on a commercial bus parked by the roadside and spilled its content on the road.

Some residents trooped out on seeing the fuel gushing out of the tanker and started to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker.

Policemen and officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, who later arrived at the scene, cordoned off the road.

The driver of the commercial bus, who identified himself simply as Tolu, said, “I had a flat tyre and was looking for a vulcaniser to mend the tyre. The passengers had already disembarked when the tanker fell on the bus.”

An eyewitness, Mohammed Adebayo, urged the government to rehabilitate the road.

He said, “The vehicle entered a pothole and the tanker pulled off. It fell on the bus. But nobody was inside the bus. The driver was mending one of the bus’ tyres when the tanker fell on it.

“This accident would have been avoided if the road was in good condition. The accident was caused by the pothole on the road.”

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Mohammed Husein, when contacted, said he would find out and get back to our correspondent.

Meanwhile, the new Commissioner of Police posted to Osun State, Mr. Kola Sodipo, has resumed in the state.

Sodipo promised to do his best to make the state more peaceful than he met it.
