Sodje urges Mikel Obi to stay at Chelsea
Sam Sodje has advised John Mikel Obi, to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, as he finds it hard to break into Jose Mourinho’s starting 11 this season.
Mourinho prefers Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas in the two deep-lying positions, while Ramires and Kurt Zouma have been asked to play the roles ahead of Mikel Obi.
Sodje has urged his compatriot not to quit and said he “will get his time”.
“Mikel has done brilliant,” the former Super Eagles defender told Goal.
“It is not an easy feat playing for a big team like Chelsea for several seasons, so I want [Nigerians] to be careful about what we wish for him.
“The English Premier League is a very tough league and hopefully I believe he can do well with the Blues in future.
“Personally, I want him to stay at Chelsea because he would definitely get his chance to play.”
Mikel Obi was recently left out of the Super Eagles squad, that will travel to Tanzania for an AFCON 2017 qualifier. Sodje insists that the Chelsea midfielder still has a role to play in the national team.
“Mikel is a top player and Sunday Oliseh himself knows this,” he continued.
“No matter who plays, the Super Eagles should be made a very attractive team to play for, Mikel or no Mikel.”
