The Lagos State House of Assembly has confirmed petitions against the
nominees for clearance as commissioners and special advisers by the
state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
The House, however, assured that the petitions do not mean automatic disqualification.
Ambode had sent a list of 37 nominees for confirmation.
Lagos Assembly, in turn, set up a 15-man ad-hoc committee to thoroughly screen the nominees.
Speaking on the petitions, Chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Deputy Speaker of the House, Wasiu Sanni-Eshilokun, disclosed that the House, as a responsive and responsible institution, would be an unbiased umpire.
“Any petition against any of the nominees will not amount to automatic disqualification. We will confront them with such petitions and allow them to respond.
“What I’m principally saying is that we will give the nominees fair hearing and then the House will come up with an appropriate decision,” Eshilokun stated.
Meanwhile, a resident of the state, Abiodun Benson has petitioned the House over the inclusion of the name of Dr. Femi Onanuga in the list over alleged misappropriation of funds.
The petition titled: “Objection to the Nomination/Approval of Dr. Olufemi Onanuga as a Commissioner or Special Adviser in Lagos State,” was dated 28 September 2015.
It reads in part: “Dr Olufemi Onanuga was a member of Ikoyi Club 1938 and we both served as members of the General Committee of the club between 2007 and 2008.
“He was then the vice-chairman of the club and I was the chairman of the Billiards and Snooker section of the club.
“As a result of diverse investigation into financial/ administrative activities in Ikoyi Club 1938, Dr Olufemi Onanuga had to face disciplinary panel in the club, which led to his expulsion from the club.
“I Chief Oladele Abiodun Benson, Nigerian citizen, indigene of Lagos State and a member of Ikoyi Club 1938, hereby formally lodge my objection to the nomination and or approval by the Assembly of Dr Olufemi Onanuga to serve as a commissioner/ special adviser in the Executive of my dear state, Lagos.”
