Governor Ayodele Fayose
GOVERNOR Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, on Thursday, reiterated his demand for a free and fair election on July 14 in the state, saying any attempt to rig the coming election would be resisted by the people of the state.
Fayose, who spoke at the inauguration of the new judiciary complex in the state capital, named after the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Oba Ademola Ajakaye, who was the first Chief Judge of the state, also called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to look into the nonapproval of judges for the Ekiti State judiciary in about 10 years.
He said at the inauguration of the project that the July election would show the difference between “boys and the men”, saying that he was aware that some people were planning to do in the election to jeopardise it.
Fayose said: “In another six weeks there would be an election in our state. We will know whether there’s a difference between the boys and the men. I’m aware of all the things you are trying to do because you don’t know what I know. You will fail the same way you failed in Anambra. You will fail woefully here. Every machination shall fail.”
Fayose, who, however, refused to mention names said: “I dare INEC to come and rig here, I dare you to come and rig in Ekiti; I assure you that you will meet a brick wall.”
Speaking on the new structure, he said justice Ajakaye deserved being honoured with the building while alive because, according to him, he read of the sacrifices Oba Ajakaye made when the state was created in 1990.
Addressing the CJN, represented by Justice Olu Ariwoola, Fayose said “Ekiti needs a customary court of appeal. I have signed it and I have spoken with my CJ, and he said he has communicated to Abuja. We deserve it.
“Since 2010, we have only 11 judges. All the judges retiring here, we are not replacing them. What have we done to you? Please tell CJN that we deserve more judges. We have only one female judge. Many of our people are wasting away, their careers are being ruined because Ekiti is being sidelined.”
In the speech of Justice Onnoghen, read by Justice Ariwoola, he commended the Fayose administration for investing N1.9billion in the development if the judiciary in the state, saying it would be gratifying if the development could be replicated in the other divisions of the court.
The CJN maintained that with necessary funding and adequate infrastructure, the judiciary will live up to be the hope of the common man.
Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State said on the occasion that politics was about development, and commended Fayose for managing the state resources well, saying “he has done well with the little money the state was receiving as allocations.”
The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayodeji Daramola; Chief Afe Babalola, Oba Ajakaye, the state’s first Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Makanjuola Esan (SAN); Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN); Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Ekiti State, through its chairman, Mr. Niyi Ogundare were among those who eulogised Fayose for the modern complex, saying he had become an example other leaders in and outside the state should emulate.
Earlier, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kolapo Kolade, has disclosed that the new building was replacing the one that had been in use for 50 years, saying the occasion of the inauguration was unique because it was the first of its kind in the state.
The Commissioner for Works, Mrs Funmilayo Ogun said the building was commissioned on October 12, 2016, and that Governor Fayose had kept his promise of delivering it within schedule
