Kate Middleton wears old dress to Meghan Markle’s wedding, gets mixed reactions

If the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, thought she was being frugal by wearing an old dress to the wedding of her brother-in-law on Saturday, she was, perhaps, mistaken.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were joined in holy wedlock on Saturday at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Kate, a mother-of-three, is known to sometimes repeat her ensembles, including shoes, but her choice of an old dress whose colour is also a subject for debate, has been met with condemnation and commendation alike.

While everyone felicitated Meghan and Harry, Kate provoked endless social media arguments for wearing what an observer said was a dress which she had worn on two previous occasions.

People expressed concerns that the recent occasion was an international event involving her own husband’s only brother, Harry, and his superstar-turned-British royalty wife, Meghan Markle.

The comments were ignited by a tweet from Elizabeth Holmes, who describes herself on her Twitter handle as a “roving reporter with over 10 years covering style, retail and politics.”

Holmes noted that Kate had earlier worn the same dress to the Queen’s birthday, and also during her daughter Charlotte’s christening. Charlotte clocked three on May 2.

See Holmes’ tweet:

Kate wearing a dress she has worn TWICE before. Charlotte’s christening and the Queen’s birthday. #RoyalWedding
Truly the nicest gesture she could show her now sister-in-law. Absolutely nothing to see here! Focus on the bride! pic.twitter.com/WQ0Vq8QfB0

And here’s what people are saying about Kate’s royal wedding wardrobe choice:

Some ridicule her thriftiness:

Nah, it’s just cos she’s just had a baby and hasn’t had the time or energy since then to pop in to Primark for a new frock.

*Also, a dress she has worn to “family” events. A subtle nod, as well.

What about the fact that she’s wearing white? We would never do this in North America, I’m not sure if the same faux pas applies in Britain?

Kate is not as sexy as her sister in law. Kate needs to hire a new stylist because she dresses like an old frump!

Some see it as insensitive to etiquette:

Really? My interpretation is that Kate is saying, “I don’t care enough to even get a new dress.” I think it is a diss.

Except its in the royal etiquette book only the bride wears white. This is a SLAM at the bride

Others defend her:

She still has more class. William chose well.

All class!

SO nice of Kate! Definitely not going to have a Pippa-esque stealing-the-thunder moment today.

I thought her outfit was beautiful. I hadn’t noticed she’d worn it before and I don’t think it matters.

Some make gender comparisons in her defence:

Why even mention she’s worn in twice? A man probably wore a suit a million times before and won’t get picked up on it. (I’m agreeing with you, hope it’s clear enough!)

Some are cynical:

Shock horror- woman wears something more than once.

My 14 yo daughter just said”well yes, she has a washing machine “

For others, it’s her hat:

I don’t understand the helicopter hats😂
