Some supporters of the All Progressives Congress have continued to protest against the conduct of the local government congresses in Imo State.
Dozens of aggrieved party members stormed the APC National Secretariat, Abuja, on Thursday to seek the intervention of the party’s leadership in what they described as a travesty of justice.
The protesters, who were prevented from taking the law into their own hands by the police, asked the party to sack its National Organising Secretary, whom they accused of complicity in the controversy which greeted the exercise.
Thursday’s group of protesters, who were led by Kassim Mohammed and came under the aegis of the Democratic Youth Congress for Buhari 2019, carried placards with inscriptions such as: “Sen. Osita must go” and “There must be fresh congresses in Imo.”
It, however, took the intervention of policemen and other security personnel to prevent a breakdown of law and order as the protesters demanded to be allowed to gain entry into the secretariat to meet party officials.
As security men at the gate resisted the attempt by the protesters to forcefully gain entrance, the protesters became unruly prompting the intervention of the police.
The leader of the group, Mohammed, who later spoke on its behalf, accused the party’s National Organising Secretary of indirectly working for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in a bid to frustrate the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
He also submitted a letter addressed to the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, stating their grievances and listing their demands.
In the letter dated May 17, 2018, the group demanded that fresh ward congresses be held in states where there were glaring cases of manipulations so that such issues could be amicably resolved.
The letter partly read “We humbly wish to write and formally notify you of our grievances toward the recently concluded ward congresses of the party in Imo State.
“Sir, the National Organising Secretary of APC, Sen. Osita Izunaso, is hell-bent on causing confusion in Imo state to frustrate Owelle Rochas Okorocha out of the party. We are not comfortable with the development and demand that he should be sacked immediately.
“We also want to notify the National Working Committee that Sen. Osita Izunaso is playing the script of the opposition to deliver the South-East for his sole interest.”
