AN Osun State High Court, sitting in Ikirun, on Thursday sentenced a 25-year-old man, identified as Tajudeen Ganiyu to death by hanging for killing his neighbour’s four years old boy, Tesleem Bakare.
It is recalled that the convict lured the innocent boy from his grandmother with the promise to buy him groundnuts sometimes in 2017 and took him to a secluded area where he slaughtered him.
Tajudeen was later apprehended by some youths, who took him to the palace of the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rauf Olayiwola Adedeji, where he was handed over to the Police. Upon interrogation, the convict confessed to having killed the boy and led the policemen to the bush, where the remains of his victim were recovered.
While delivering his judgment, Justice Jide Falola noted that the convict during his trial on February 14, 2018, admitted the guilt of a murder, but claimed to be mentally challenged.
However, the judge affirmed that the convict failed to give satisfactory evidence of medical facility where had been confirmed or treated for mental illness, adding that “the accused did not exhibit any sign of insanity in the box as he answered all questions satisfactorily during cross-examination in the course of the proceedings”.
The court held that the boy was slaughtered like a ram and subsequently convicted the accused as charged.
But, a lawyer from the Legal Aid Council, that represented the convict, Mrs Esther Napoleon pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, describing her client as a first time offender.
Justice Falola ordered that the convict should be hanged by the neck until he dies, just as he advised to be watchful over their children by not leaving them to strangers, with a view to ensuring their safety.
