Photos: President Trump and Melania welcome three American prisoners released by North Korean leader, Kim Jung Un

Early this morning, President Trump along with his wife, Melania welcomed three Americans imprisoned in North Korea back to the country and said: 'We want to thank Kim Jong Un'.

Trump arrived at the Andrews Air Base outside Washington at about  2am to greet Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim and called them 'incredible people' as he clapped and cheered the men as they walked down the steps on to American soil with their arms in the air giving triumphant 'V' signs used to signify both peace and victory.

On the Tarmac the US President said: 'These are great people. Frankly we didn't think this was going to happen but it did. It was important to get these people out. This is a special night for these three really great people'.

Trump also thanked Kim Jong Un for freeing 'the folks early', calling it 'a wonderful thing', adding he believes the North Korean leader 'really wants to do something' and bring the pariah state 'into the real world. We're starting off on a new footing. My proudest achievement will be when we denuclearize that entire [Korean] peninsula', he added.

The three men were released yesterday after up to three years of prison and hard labour after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo left Pyongyang after meeting with Kim Jong Un to formalise final plans for a Trump-Kim summit in late May or early June.
