Police kill one, nab three bandits in Taraba

The Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Mr. David Akinremi, on Sunday said men of the command had killed a suspected robber and arrested three others when the gang engaged them in a gun duel in Borno Kurku forest in the Bali Local Government Area of the state.

The commissioner said in a statement the police team stormed the forest based on intelligence received at about 1000hrs on Saturday

“In the process, one of them was gunned down by the superior firepower of our operatives while three others were arrested.

“An Ak47 rifle with eight rounds of ammunition, some criminal charms, an army camouflage uniform and cutlasses were recovered from the suspects,” the statement read.

The police said the three suspects were Lawali Shehu,  Halilu  Umaru,  and Isa Abdullahi.

Meanwhile, fear of reprisals has forced both Fulani and the Mumuye natives to flee their villages especially at Dazan and Gadan Malari in the Yorro Local Government Area of the state.

Irate Mumuye youths had last week clashed with Fulani herdsmen in the area leading to the death of six persons.

The Chairman of Yorro Local Government Area, Joseph Sanweri, told our correspondent on Sunday that the Secretary of the local government, Daniel Dila, was arrested in connection with the violence in the area.

According to him, the secretary was arrested by the police based on reports that he had a link with the youths that killed six Fulanis and burnt their houses.

Sanweri called on the people of the area to remain calm “as security personnel had been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.”

Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP. David Missal, confirmed the arrest, saying several people were arrested in connection with the violence in the area.

Missal, who said the situation in the area was calm, warned against reprisals by any group.
