There has been apprehension at Ungwan Lambu, a predominantly student settlement in the Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State following the outbreak of suspected Salmonella Enteritis disease.
It was gathered that one person has died from the epidemic which broke out in the area last week.
Investigation by Northern City News revealed that those affected by the disease were mostly Nasarawa State University students living in Angwan Lambu, a student settlement close to the campus.
Some students, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said some victims of the epidemic were on admission at a school clinic.
“Even though we are not medical personnel, the day we observed that our colleague was ill was when he was stooling and at the same time vomiting consistently.
“We asked him to visit the medical facility of the school and what we can tell you as far as we know was that his case was suspected to be cholera or diarrhea because the vomiting was too much,” a student explained.
A community leader in Angwan Lambu, Mallam Abubakar Mohammed, disclosed that one Ramatu Abdullahi, a housewife and a mother of eight lost her life to the disease a day after she was admitted to the General Hospital.
When contacted, the NSU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abraham Ekpo, confirmed that some affected students were admitted to the school clinic, noting that the medical officials from the state’s ministry of health who investigated the incident had not released their findings to the institution.
“We are only but caregivers and as a management, we don’t take lightly issues affecting our students; we first suspected it was cholera, but the intervention of the state ministry of health has doused the tension in the area.
“I know some medical officials from the state ministry of health visited the school clinic but I am not aware of the outcome of their findings,” he stated.
But the Director, Primary Health Care in the state ministry of health, Dr Ibrahim Adamu, said samples from the patients indicated that the outbreak was caused by Salmonella Enteritis disease.
According to him, the disease has similar symptoms with cholera and is associated with severe fever, headache and weakness of the body.
