Ijaw leaders clamour for more control of oil rents

Leaders of some oil-producing communities in Delta State have vowed to resist any attempt to take the control of oil rents away from them.

The aggrieved communities whose action follows the new Petroleum Host and Impacted Communities Development Bill by the National Assembly, which reduces the percentage accruable to them from oil rents to 2.5 from 10, said that they would seek all legal means to take their entitlement.

In a letter addressed to Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and signed by Gbaramatu-Egbema-Ogulagha Coastal Communities Front, the Ijaw leaders said that any attempt by any group or individuals to meddle in their internal affairs with the aim of shortchanging them could lead to serious crisis in the region.

The letter said, “The oil companies have no business in determining the emergence of community representatives who manage the host and impacted communities’ fund.

“Section 118 of the proposed PIB 2012 clearly states that 10 per cent of the oil companies’ net profits should be remitted for the benefit of the host communities.”
