The Lagos State Police Command has sacked the Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Cultism Squad, SP Godwin Agbegbe, and the men and officers serving in the unit over allegations of corruption.
While all policemen attached to the unit were ordered to report at the command headquarters for redeployment, Agbegbe was replaced by a Chief Superintendent of Police, Akaninyene Etuk.
A police source said that the command received many complaints against the OC and the unit, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, was forced to take the decision.
“It was not because of any particular case; the complaints against the unit were just too many,” she said.
The command spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday.
He said, “The reorganisation of the squad was necessitated by unprofessional conducts of its personnel, as well as the corruption in the unit. It is also to revitalise the outfit for the fight against cultism in the state by infusing it with fresh blood for better service delivery.
“The CP Lagos warns that the same treatment awaits any other unit in the command that is working at cross purposes with the fundamental objectives of the Nigeria Police Force. He adds that Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and heads of departments must increase supervision of their men to ensure non-violation of the police Standard Operating Procedure.”
