Level of insecurity now intolerable, says Sosan

A former deputy governor of Lagos State, Sarah Sosan, has said the insecurity in the country can no longer be tolerated.

Sosan, while speaking at a seminar on societal insecurity, which was organised by the Cosmopolitan Women Club of Lagos in Lagos on Tuesday, stated that insecurity in the country had reached an alarming level.

While calling on the government at all levels to find a lasting solution to the insecurity issue, Sosan urged everyone to look after and protect themselves.

She said, “Sadly, societal insecurity is becoming a norm in Nigeria. I really cannot understand where it all went wrong or what we have done wrong to deserve this. The implication of all these is always on the women and children in the society, this is really unfair.

“The government is not even spending money on the right things. Money spent on other luxury and irrelevant items should instead be spent on employing more law enforcement agents and equipping them with ammunition.”

A lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Abiola Akiode-Afolabi, while speaking on the theme ‘Societal Insecurity: Women, Children and Vulnerable Groups’, stated that the issue of insecurity couldn’t be dealt with if unemployment was not addressed.

She said the majority of the unemployed population were resorting to violence to earn a living, and to unleash their frustration on people.

According to her, Nigeria is steadily sliding towards a state of lawlessness.

“The insecurity we are experiencing now is a result of our constant neglect of youths, and other key issues. The Boko-Haram sect of today are the young children who previously used to beg for left-overs and meal crumbs from restaurants. Had attention been paid to them, we would not have had Boko-Haram,” Akiode-Afolabi added.
