Fifty-five of the 210 inmates that escaped at the Minna new prison have been recaptured, Controller- General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed has said.
Disclosing this in Abuja on Thursday during an emergency meeting with top officers of the service on the security breach in Minna prison, the CG explained that the report of investigations into the attack in the prison was being awaited.
Unknown gunmen had stormed the facility last Sunday, overpowered the personnel and released 210 inmates.
The gunmen also shot and killed a prison officer that was resuming duty and the motorcyclist that conveyed him.
Ahmed stated that a committee set up to investigate the remote and immediate cause of the incident would soon turn in its findings.
He said, “This meeting is convened in light of the recent developments in the service especially the security breach in Minna prison, Niger State.
“This is certainly a sad development especially coming at a time the service is beginning to heave a sigh of relief as our formations across the country have been witnessing peace and calm, celebrating significant breakthroughs in inmates’ education and training in sundry vocational skills, supply and distribution of drugs and stores as well as massive infrastructural interventions.”
The CG admonished the prison personnel to re-assess their attitude to duty and to treat inmates in a more humane manner, adding that the shortage of manpower was being addressed with the ongoing recruitment into the service.
Meanwhile, about 38 prison inmates across various prisons in Nasarawa State have regained their freedom.
Governor Umaru Al-Makura, who granted pardon to the inmates, also paid the fines of 28 others, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Ahdulkarim Kana.
