Teenager dies after swimming in River Aire, Leeds

THE body of a teenager who died while swimming in a river in Leeds has been recovered.

The 17-year-old swimmer died after getting into difficulty in the River Aire on Tuesday evening.

His body was recovered in the early hours of Wednesday, West Yorkshire Police said.

A spokesman said: “West Yorkshire Police received a report from the ambulance service shortly before 6.45pm (Tuesday) of a 17-year-old male having entered the River Aire near to Cardigan Fields, Kirkstall.

“Police attended the scene alongside West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

“At around 1.30am (Wednesday) a body was recovered from the water. Inquiries are ongoing.”

A community support officer was seen guarding a path to the river on Wednesday.

The teenager’s name has not been released.
