Ekiti gov poll: Fayemi meets Buhari, gets court’s nod to contest

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday met behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja a few hours after Buhari returned to the country from Mauritania where he attended the 31st Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

It was held barely 12 days to the governorship election holding on July 14.

Fayemi left the Presidential Villa at about 12.30pm without talking to State House correspondents who wanted to ask him the purpose of the visit.

The Presidency had also yet to issue a press statement on the meeting as of the time of filing this report.

Fayemi recently resigned his appointment as the Minister of Mines and Steel Development to enable him to contest the governorship election.

Meanwhile, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Bwari, Abuja, on Tuesday quashed the report of the Ekiti State Government’s Judicial Commission of Enquiry indicting Fayemi, and compelling him to account for the whereabouts of the sum of N2.75bn expended during his administration as the governor of the state between 2010 and 2014.

Delivering a judgment on Tuesday, Justice O. A Mohammed also quashed the White Paper issued by the state government based on the report and declared the ex-minister eligible to contest the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The suit in which the court delivered the judgment on Tuesday was filed by the Action Peoples Party.

The plaintiff had in the suit marked FCT/HC/CV/57/2018, prayed for an order disqualifying Fayemi and restraining the APC from fielding him as its candidate on the grounds of his indictment in the report by the Judicial Commission of Enquiry, which was set up by Governor Ayodele Fayose.
