Niger police arrest robbery suspects, recover N2.1m items


THE Niger State Police Command has arrested a five-man robbery gang allegedly operating in the Tipper Garage, Nyikangbe, Gbeganu and Fadikpe in the Chanchaga Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, Mohammed Kazim, 20; Musa Ahmed, 18; Yakabu Mohammed, 16; Lawal Danjuma, 18; and Ismail Abdul, 20, were apprehended by the police operatives on a tip-off.

It was learnt that the gang specialised in breaking into peoples’ homes and shops.

Northern City News gathered that the bandits allegedly broke into the shops and apartments of some residents of Kpakungu area in Minna and made away with valuables worth N2,144,600, including gold jewelries estimated at N200,000.

Checks revealed that the suspects hailed from Sokoto and Bauchi states and had been living in Minna for the past 10 years.

One of the suspects, kazim, told our correspondent in an interview on Sunday, that the gang sold stolen items to ready buyers at give-away prices.

The suspect said he was introduced to the crime by one Haruna, now at large, who gave him stolen items to sell to clients.

“I have not been doing any work since I was born, I did not even complete my secondary school; Haruna told me that I’m smart and that he was going to make me rich within one year by bringing stolen goods for me to market and now I’m in a deep mess,” he said.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, said two receivers of the stolen goods, Babangida Wakili, 25,  and Dahiru Suleiman, 34 were also arrested.

He said that detectives recovered from them two plasma televisions, one bundle of women wrappers, two earrings, one handset, one laptop, two DVD players, one echolac cooler and a rechargeable lantern.

Other items were two sewing machines, four hammers and pliers, digital camera, a home theatre, one DSTV decoder, one mp4 radio player, Gotv decoder, one computer monitor and a necklace.
