Taraba State of Nigeria: Governorship Election Declared Inconclusive.

The governorship election in Taraba State, Nigeria, has been declared inconclusive, as a result of massive cancellation of votes, though the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leads with over 54,812 votes.

The returning officer for the state governorship election, Professor Muhammad Kyuri, while declaring the result, stated that the number of cancelled votes (127,125) was more than the difference between the winning PDP's 317,198 and the APC's 262,386 which is about 54,812.

Kyuri, however, explained that the run-off election would be held between the candidate of PDP and APC in the affected areas, 30 days before swearing-in, to determine the winner.

Elections were controversially cancelled in the whole of Donga Local Government Area due to alleged rigging and violence in five polling units out of the 165 polling units in the local government.

Reacting, PDP's candidate, Darius Ishaku, expressed shock, adding that there was no need to cancel the whole local government since only five wards were affected.

The APC agent, Alhaji Gambo Umar, however, said the decision was the best for the current situation, while accusing the PDP of shortchanging his party.

Meanwhile, the state government has declared curfew effective 7.00 p.m to 6.00 a.m., to contain tension quickly escalating in the state.

There was tension in Jalingo, the state capital, with the announcement of the result, as gunshots were fired at various locations in the town.

The military personnel on patrol were seen arresting several youths on the rampage with weapons, including Dane guns, bows and arrows, matchete and sticks.
