PETER Odemwingie is toasting his first goal back by thanking Peter Crouch for the lessons in heading, Stoke Sentinel reports.
The forward found the net on Saturday for
the first time since returning from eight months out on the sidelines
with a serious knee injury.
That strike and his energy after coming
off the bench with half an hour to play was the major highlight of the
game as Stoke slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of hosts Cologne in
the pre-season Colonia Cup.
He said, “That’s what I’m asked to do.
The gaffer knows I make that run. I need to be in the right place
because we have players who can clip the ball in so definitely I’m going
to do that.
“And I told Peter Crouch that after two years playing with him if I can’t head that in then I’m learning nothing!”
Odemwingie returned to action in April
following a massive recovery process after limping out of a 1-0 win at
Manchester City last August.
He was able to celebrate in front of the
near 2,000 travelling Stoke fans packed into the corner high up in the
RheinEnergieStadion.
He said: “It was great to score … and in
front of the fans as well that made it special. The numbers that I’ve
seen in Cologne today makes me so happy. We’ve had a lot of support.
“To be honest it doesn’t matter if it was
a friendly or not, it was important to get that first goal. One shot
has to hit the net.
“I’ve set a big target for myself this
year and even in training it’s important to score. I’m really happy that
this one is off my shoulders and hopefully the next one is in the
league.”
