NYSC Reacts to Rainstorm Disaster in Taraba Camp.

Brigadier General Suleiman Kazurazaure

Following a heavy rainfall that caused a major disaster at the Taraba State National Youth Service Corps,(NYSC), the scheme’s management has described the occurrence as a natural disaster.

It was reported that corps members at the camp had massively protested the disaster which led to the injury of an undisclosed number of corps members.

They claimed that this could have been if the welfare of corps members is well prioritized.

Reacting to the report, the NYSC spokesperson, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi when contacted affirmed that the rainstorm blew off some of the camp’s roof injuring corps members in the process.

She said the occurrence was beyond the scheme’s control adding that repairs work have since commenced in the camp.

Also, she said the injured Corps members have been taken to the state’s Federal Medical Centre(FMC), noting that some of them have been discharged and returned to the camp.

“There was a rainfall, no doubt about that, that is a natural disaster, which is beyond anybody’s control. There was a rainfall yesterday in Taraba and it blew off the roof in some places, injuring some corps members. They have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre(FMC),” she said.

Adeyemi further stated that the State’s Governor, Darius Ishaku, has visited the injured Corps members as well as the camp and also ordered immediate renovation of affected parts of the camp.

…the state’s government has visited them and they have commenced repair works at the camp. Can anybody hold nature, renovation is ongoing.

“The last time there was a rainstorm, the camp is always renovated. There is no fatality and some of the injured corps members are already returning to camp,” she added.

In another development, the Director General of the scheme, Brigadier General  Suleiman Kazaure has advised corps members to be security conscious in their respective host communities during the service year.

The Director-General, Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure gave the advice while addressing the 2018 Batch ‘A’ Corps Members at the Orientation Camp in Obubra, Cross River State.

Kazaure, who said they would soon be posted to new environments after the Orientation Course urged them to be wary of people with questionable characters, but conduct themselves as role models and responsible leaders.

Also, he warned female Corps Members to avoid indecent and provocative dressings that may contradict the cultural beliefs of their host communities.

The Director-General also urged them to strive and add value to their host communities by leaving good legacies through the provision of developmental projects that would ameliorate their sufferings.

“Avoid unauthorised journey, don’t indulge in night parties and make sure you conduct yourselves as good ambassadors at all time,” Kazaure said.
