The
Super Falcons have dropped nine places to 38th in the latest FIFA rankings
released by the world football governing body on Friday.
Despite
playing the highest number of games – seven – the African champions still found
themselves as the biggest losers in the rankings as they dropped the most
places.
Two-time
African champions, Equatorial Guinea, gained five places to 50th.
In
spite of the plunge, however, the Falcons are still rated as Africa’s number
one ahead of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, South Africa and Ivory Coast.
Algeria,
Morocco and Tunisia completed the top 10 for Africa.
The
leading teams at the top of the ranking retained their positions as the USA
held on to the number one spot ahead of Germany and France.
But
the East Asian Cup, which was played in China PR in August, threw up new
positions. World Cup runners-up Japan (4th, no change) had a disappointing East
Asian Cup campaign, finishing in third place, which equates to a drop of 21
points in the ranking. Nevertheless, the Nadeshiko have held on to fourth place
in the ranking between France (3rd, no change) and England (5th, no change).
Hot
on their heels are Korea DPR (6th, up 2), who have climbed two places on the
back of their triumph at the East Asian Cup. Conversely, Brazil (7th, down 1)
and Sweden (8th, down 1) have both fallen one place as a result, with eighth
place representing Sweden’s lowest-ever position in the ranking.
