Louis Van Gaal has warned that Anthony Martial will only get
better, after the teenager grabbed a brace as Manchester United beat
Southampton 3-2 on Sunday.
The
France international, who arrived for an initial £36m this summer, had
scored on his debut at home against Liverpool and showed composure to
score twice at St Marys, as United rose to second place, two points
behind Manchester City.
“What pleases me most about him is that he scores goals,” said Van Gaal.
“That
is the most important thing, that as a striker he scores goals. That is
his quality, his talent. He can improve I think but he has a high level
of talent. He shows it.
“You cannot expect
consistency from a player of 19 years old. Emotionally they shall have a
lot of dips, so that I expect also from him but that is not a big
problem for me.
“He cannot speak English, I speak
French with him, First he needs to adapt to the English culture, he is
doing great – three matches in a row and three goals. Not every player
can adapt in that system, but he shows he wants to do that and he can do
that.”
