Chancellor faults planned stoppage of tuition

The Founder and Chancellor of Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Dr Ramon Adedoyin, has faulted moves by the Federal Government to stop the payment of tuition in government-owned higher institutions.

He argued on Monday that public universities deserved to be given full autonomy to enable them to operate more efficiently.

He said this while reacting to a statement by the Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwuka, that there was no law backing the payment of tuition in schools.

Adedoyin said, “Rather than cancel fees, the Federal Government should treat all the existing 171 universities as the same, whether federal, state or private and allow them to charge whatever fees they like, but should rather take up the responsibility for the payment of the tuition on behalf of the students into the purses of such universities

“The universities’ managements will, therefore, be able to pay for all the expenses of running the institutions like payment of salaries, purchase of equipment, building and maintenance of infrastructure.”

He advised the Federal Government to reposition Nigeria’s universities by providing enough funds for their activities.

“Increased funding is critical to achieving the repositioning as the government cannot single-handedly fund the university system.”
