UK group donates relief materials to Abuja IDPs

A United Kingdom-based group, the Royal Initiative Against Poverty and Starvation, has decried the level of starvation in Nigeria’s Internally Displaced Persons camps, noting that 70 per cent of citizens still lived below the poverty level.

The group stated this on Saturday while donating relief materials to IDPs at the Kuchingoro camp in the Federal Capital Territory, adding that about 3000 children died in the country daily due to poverty and starvation.

The President, James Okpanachi, said the Federal Government must work with the private sector “to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals with a focus on eradicating extreme hunger and poverty, encourage child education as well as improve school enrolment in Nigeria.”

He said, “There are plans to employ teachers to come and manage the school-age children in the IDPs camp. We also want to bring computers, books, desks and other logistics to the school. We partner with donors from the United Kingdom to achieve these objectives.

“If 70 per cent of the population is living below one dollar or 63 pence per day, I think that is an extreme situation. It is hard to be productive at that level. We believe we should partner with the government to raise the living standards of the IDPs and Nigerians generally.

“The Federal Government is doing its bit and has to be supported by the private sector.”

The UK group also visited the City of Refuge Orphanage Home in neighbouring Durumi area to donate food items, school uniform, classroom teaching and learning aids to the orphans.
