NHIS Boss, Yusuf Umar drags Health Minister, AGF before court over his suspension

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, has filed a suit before a Federal High Court in Abuja against the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN) challenging his suspension.

Yusuf who was ordered by President Buhari to go on compulsory leave yesterday, October 31st, has asked the court to remove the suspension handed over to him by the governing council of the health parastatal on October 19th. The council had suspended Yusuf following allegations of misappropriation of funds to the tune of N919 million meant for the parastatal and also for abuse of office. The Health Minister had last year July, removed him from office but he was asked to resume by the presidency in February 2018.

In the suit filed by his counsel, Uchechukwu Obi (SAN), Yusuf is contending that “only the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and no other, upon the recommendation of the minister of health can discipline, investigate, suspend or remove him from office.”

He further asked the court to ensure his purported suspension from the NHIS by the board of the agency was null and void.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the matter.
