One policeman and a bank official were killed when armed suspected armed robbers invaded a old generation bank in Ilawe community in Ekiti Sputh West Local Government Area of Ekiti State, on Tuesday.
Residents of the community told the Nigerian Tribune that the robbers had commenced their operation at about 2:45 pm and that it had lasted for more than an hour, in which one other official of the bank was said to have been shot in the arm.
The community people said the robbers had destroyed the bank’s security door with explosives, and added that the explosive device had also destroyed a car parked near the bank.
The traditional ruler of Ilawe, the Alawe , Oba Adebanji Alabi, who spoke on the telephone, expressed shock at the incident, which he described as a warlike situation.
Oba Alabi said the robbers had turned his domain to a warfront by firing dynamite and grenade which caused panic and paralysed traffic, halted businesses and threw the community into confusion.
Oba Alabi said: “It was a terrible experience, my palace is very close to the bank. It was terrifying, it was like a warfront. They kept detonating grenades during the attack.
“I was in the palace during the robbery, the attack happened less than a hour after a bullion van delivered cash to the bank. We have been in touch with the governor and the state police command.”
Police reaction could not be obtained by press time
