President’s appearance with Putin not in America’s best interest, top citizens say

Top echelons in American government have decried President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, describing it as “an embarrassing spectacle,” and concluding that “it is not in America’s best interest.”

The daughter of Jon Huntsman Jr, United States ambassador to the Russian Federation, fired one of the shots when she tweeted at President Trump that no negotiation is worth “throwing your own people and country under the bus.”

Ms Abby Huntsman and top echelons of American government, ex-aides and other notables had variously tweeted at Trump after the Trump-Putin news conference in Helsinki on Monday.

Taking to her verified Twitter handle, Abby, a Fox News Channel anchor had tweeted, “No negotiation is worth throwing your own people and country under the bus.”

In the series of tweets and talking about US-Russia diplomatic relations, Ms Huntsman warns: “Our relationship has never been worse than it is now… however, that changed, as of about four hours ago… I really believe that.

“I would rather take a political risk in pursuit of peace, than to risk peace in pursuit of politics, @realDonaldTrump.”

Meanwhile, there have been calls for Ambassador Huntsman to resign from Trump’s cabinet.

A former top aide to the ambassador had advised the U.S. envoy to “resign if you have any honor.”

John Weaver, who was Huntsman’s chief strategist during his 2012 bid for president, tweeted the message at his former boss on Monday following President Trump’s joint press conference with Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

Weaver had tweeted at Huntsman: “@JonHuntsman Resign, if you have any honor.”

The Governor of Ohio, John Kasich, also decried the Trump-Putin meeting, issuing an official statement condemning the talk.

In a tweet via his Twitter handle, @JohnKasich, the governor had argued: “We need to be clear. Russia is our foe. Putin is actively trying to hurt our country. America needs to speak with one voice AGAINST Russia.”

This was followed by a signed statement:

The Republican Senator from Arizona, Senator John McCain, who is also Chairman of Senate Armed Services Committee, also weighed in, stating unequivocally: “Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory,” followed by a link to his ;full statement’ on the matter:

A former CIA Director, John O. Brennan, also asked: “Why did Trump meet one-on-one with Putin? What might he be hiding from Bolton, Pompeo, Kelly and the American public?

“How will Putin use whatever Trump could be hiding to advantage Russia and hurt America?
“Trump’s total lack of credibility renders spurious whatever explanation he gives,” Brennan says.

He also followed it up with a tweet describing the Helsinki summit as “exceeding the threshold of high crimes and misdemeanors”:

Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki rises to & exceeds the threshold of “high crimes & misdemeanors.” It was nothing short of treasonous. Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???
